Implementation of Water Safety Plan at the Municipality of Igoumenitsa (Greece)
Implementation of Water Safety Plan at the Municipality of Igoumenitsa
Project Description
Water Safety Plan (WSP) is a dynamic tool for ensuring the good quality of drinking water in the water supply system from the water source up to the consumers based on the relevant legislation and the applicable regulations. The success key of the Water Safety Plan implementation is the good cooperation of all stakeholders in combination with the development of the fully organized process. The Water Safety Plan has been implemented into three Phases which are briefly presented below:
Phase 1: Recording of the current situation and preparation of a guide for the implementation of the Water Safety Plan. During the Phase 1 the available data of the drinking water supply system have been collected. Afterwards, the collected data have been evaluated for their completeness, reliability and the necessity of being updated. Additionally:
- The existing measures have been identified, evaluated and examined in terms of their adequacy and effectiveness. The potential risks of the water supply system functionality during previous years have also been evaluated and examined
- Water supply zones have been defined with hydrogeological criteria and the required laboratory analysis have also been determined
- DEYAH has been supported for the assignment procedures and for the laboratory specifications
Phase 2: Implementation of Water Safety Plan guide – Laboratory analyzes. The results of the collected data from the current situation during Phase I have been taken into account and the Water Safety Plan has been implemented according to the WSP Guide. The required Laboratory Analyzes have also been performed.
Phase 3: The main objective of this Phase is the evaluation of the actions effectiveness during the implementation of the Water Safety Plan. This evaluation has been implemented by means of an appropriate WSP Quality Assurance Tool which can be modified in order to avoid dealing with emergencies.
